Subjects > Business > GCSE Applied Business

This course is the equivalent of two GCSE’s and is taught over five periods a week.  It is assessed mainly through coursework and therefore you will need to enjoy this style of assessment in order to gain a good grade.

Unit One

In this section you will investigate two businesses, one large and one small.  You will look at their location, ownership, how they are run, what methods of communication they use and how they are affected by external factors such as interest rates and the law.  You will need to make several visits to a local business to gather information.  A large piece of coursework will be produced which is worth 33% of the assessment.

Unit Two

In this section you will look at a large business and investigate its Human Resource department and how it provides Customer Service.  As with the single award GCSE above, you will look at recruiting, training, paying and motivating staff.  This second piece of coursework adds another 33% of assessment.

Unit Three

This section is similar to finance on the single GCSE course but looks at the topic in more detail.  It looks at the day to day accounting in a business, the financial documents used and how payments are made.

This unit is assessed by an external practical examination which will be taken in January with an option to re-sit it in June.

The applied course is taught as far as possible through links with business, visits, simulations and practical tasks.
