All topics provide opportunities to develop literacy, numeracy, thinking and ICT skills.

Year 7

  1. Making Connections - the main purpose of this unit is to further develop pupils' knowledge and understanding of places.  Pupils investigate some of the features and characteristics of the area around their new school, while also developing a range of geographical skills.
  2. Exploring England - pupils learn how England fits into the wider context of the UK and the British Isles.  They begin to investigate the geography of England by searching for thematic patterns and contrasts, using different types of maps.
  3. Water Resources focuses on the main effects and prevention of flooding in the UK and Bangladesh.

Year 8

  1. Settlement includes identifying types, sites, functions and patterns of settlement; the main types of land use and changes within settlement.  Much of this work involves the use of OS maps and fieldwork in Snaith.
  2. The Restless Earth includes the causes and effects of earthquakes and volcanoes and their links with other physical features.
  3. Economic Activities and the Environment includes a study of selected economic activities in the UK and how the exploitation of the earth for these activities can have unintended effects on the environment.
  4. Population - pupils find out where people live, the factors affecting population distribution and population change and the effects of these changes.

Year 9

  1. Developing Countries  - pupils investigate the indicators of development, why the quality of life is better in some countries than in others and how it can be improved in developing countries, focusing on Ghana.
  2. Geomorphological Processes includes the study of coastal landforms, their formation and how they can be affected by human actions.
  3. Going Global - includes fashion and football as global industries.
  4. Introducing Ecosystems - pupils investigate what an ecosystem is, followed by studies of Tropical Rainforest.
