What is 'Gifted and Talented'?
The Government's ambition is that every pupil - gifted and talented, struggling or average - should have the right personalised support to reach the limits of their capability.
Gifted and talented children are those who have one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop these abilities). The DfES defines G&T pupils as those that are deemed to be the top 5-10% of the school, regardless of the school's ability profile.
These pupils should be better challenged and stretched in every classroom; with opportunities to further their particular talents outside school at a local and national level.
The term 'Gifted' refers to those pupils who are recognised as having good academic potential; i.e. those who are able.
The term 'Talented' refers to those pupils who are capable of excelling in specific areas; this section of pupil's will include those pupils who may excel in areas requiring visio-spatial skills or practical abilities, such as in PE and Music.
