Subjects > Modern Foreign Languages > KS4 (GCSE) German

What is the course about?

You will study German to GCSE Level.

Who is it suitable for?

If you wish to take German in KS4 there are several points to note:

  • You should ideally have performed well in your first foreign language
  • The course will be covered at a much greater pace.
  • You will also have to study and revise independently.
  • You must be prepared to put in more time to learning and homework because of the intense nature of the course.
If you are prepared to accept these conditions, the rewards are worth it! Very few people take 2 languages at GCSE (even fewer at A level) and you will be in a very select group. Qualifications in 2 languages would put you in a very favourable position with many employers, given the national shortage of qualified linguists.

What will I study?

German is a topic based approach.  Topics will include leisure, holidays, home and the environment, school and future careers.

How I will be assessed?

  • Foundation Level
You will be expected to listen to and understand shorter items.
  • Higher Level
You will be expected to listen to and understand longer conversations and passages.

Writing 25%

This section is covered by coursework.  You must complete a minimum of 3 pieces of coursework.  The coursework makes up 25% of the total mark and is extremely important.  Pupils must produce their best work and adhere to deadlines if they are to achieve their optimum overall grade.

Speaking 25%

The test is in two sections:

  1. Role play (A situation eg. shopping or buying a ticket)
  2. A general conversation on two or three topics.

Throughout the course you will be encouraged to develop the skills necessary to express yourselves confidently in the foreign language and to develop an awareness of German speaking countries.
