Music has one attainment target: knowledge, skills and understanding which combines:
- Controlling sounds through singing and playing (performing skills)
- Creating and developing musical ideas (composing skills)
- Responding and reviewing (appraising skills)
- Listening, and applying knowledge and understanding
Throughout KS3, several 'strands' of study are followed, such as the Elements of Music, Music History, Notation and Form, Singing and Keyboard Skills. During KS3 skills in these topics are constantly reinforced and built upon year by year.
Year 7
Topics: Rhythm and Beat; Christmas Songs; National Anthems; Pitch; World Percussion.
Year 8
Music and the Media; Ground Bass and Baroque Music; Minimalism; The Human Voice; Folk Music.
Year 9
Blues; Early Rock and Roll up to the Beatles; Reggae; Silent Movies; Theme and Variation.
